My Toddler’s Speech – Language Pathologist or Speech Therapist?

When my daughter was 2 years old, we had noticed that she was not talking as clear and as often as her cousin who was 2 months younger than her. The frequent comparison by other people around us was not easy to accept as the mother of the less capable one. Although it was painful for a mother to accept that there could be a problem with my child, I had to know exactly what was wrong. Was there something wrong why my child had not developed her speech as fast as a normal 2 years old? According to her developmental Pediatrician, we had to enroll her in a toddler school but if she did not improve after a year, we would have to consult a Speech Therapist. After a year in a toddler school, she improved a little but compared to her classmates who were same age as her, she was still far behind. Thus, I tried to check their website, however, there was no Speech Therapist specified in their services instead it was Speech Language Pathologist. To the average person a child with learning disabilities has no obvious problems. Unfortunately for the child with ADD, that is beyond his control.

This is understandable when one realizes that the brain of the child with ADD is just not selective in what it absorbs. Is it any wonder these children end up by giving the whole learning process away and simply doing their ‘own thing’.

A large proportion of these children have not only ADD, but also hyperactivity adding to their problems. (ADHD) They find it impossible to keep their hands to themselves, always fiddling and touching, having absolutely no respect for objects surrounding them, be they expensive or cheap! These children appear to be completely out of focus and run and jump on furniture turning a home inside out in a matter of minutes. In the classroom the child will wander around and appear to be quite disruptive. Unfortunately the need to be on the move is not simply bad behaviour, but a neurological one.

On the other hand there is the hypoactive child who will frequently be overlooked throughout childhood. He is the one who has trouble getting off his bottom, doesn’t take much interest in sporting activities and is more than happy to just stay put! His problem is more with concentration than attention. It is easy for these children to be completely overlooked, both in the classroom and at home. They are so “good” they are virtually ignored.

Impulsiveness combined with hyperactivity is one of the most dangerous features of ADD. Dangerous to both the child and to those close at hand; this is especially so in the very young child. Cases have been reported of children running out into traffic, jumping off roofs and poking objects into electric sockets causing despair for parents and teachers alike.

The child with ADD also experiences major difficulties in waiting for anything. Unless a parent agrees instantly to a request, frustration invariably results in displays of temper. In the classroom or examination room these children often read questions incorrectly in their impatience to get started. This results in frequent incorrect answers.

It is not uncommon for a child with ADD to require a writer especially in examination situations. This is because they invariably have problems with fine motor coordination which affects their ability to tie shoelaces, do up buttons and more importantly, to develop correct hand writing skills.

We are told also that about sixty percent of all children with ADD have some problem developing their early speech patterns. They acquire speech during the first year but have some difficulties in the development of language. Generally these children gain correct receptive speech so they can easily understand the language of those around them. There is however often a delay in their ability to express themselves. The use of small sentences will frequently not start until around three years of age. If speech problems are not corrected in the early years they may well continue all the way into adult life. It is known that speech difficulties lead to a greater risk of spelling, reading or writing disabilities.

Another problem which can continue well into adulthood is low self-esteem and self confidence. This is due to a dysfunction in the limbic system. These children feel awkward mixing with their peers, a problem which becomes even more noticeable in group situations. They feel more comfortable with only one or two children at a time. These difficulties are obvious in early schooling but become alarming as the child reaches puberty. Owing to their low self-esteem, they are easily influenced by their peers and will often engage in dubious activities as they try to gain acceptance by their group. Here we see these children rapidly heading on the downward slope to becoming involved with alcohol, drugs and criminal activities.

Various methods of therapy are available the more common being remedial teaching, speech therapy, behavioural therapy and dietary assistance. There is also drug therapy, this being the most controversial. The claim is that the majority of children with ADD respond positively to drugs but it has been proved that there are some who are actually made worse by this form of treatment. Consequently this treatment is only performed through a specialist and the child is monitored closely to determine his reaction.

The Tingler Incident: A Boy’s First Movie Adventure

I guess I was about 9 when “The Tingler” was showing on the big screen in my hometown. I have an aunt about six years older. She decided to take me to see this movie. Why she thought this was a good idea is beyond me. I had never been to a movie theatre or seen a scary movie and had no idea what to expect or how to act. I guess this was just another one of those learn as you go experiences.

Two things happened, I did learn and I did go.

At the time “The Tingler” was made, there were not a whole lot of special effects so to make things more interesting, the managers of theaters had to be creative to make these low-budget movies scarier and attract more customers. I do not believe I was their target audience, quite the opposite, I believe my aunt, a teenager of about 15 at the time thought of me as her target to scare the daylights out of, and give her something to laugh about with her friends.

She was the aunt that had such a significant impact on my life as a babysitter. The one who punished us for misbehaving by making us stand with our nose in the corner as punishment. The only accomplishment of this punishment was to establish our growth rate by measuring the height of where the paint was worn away in the crack of the corner of the wall. I spent so much time with my nose in the corner I had to start wearing glasses when I was 8 years old.

Being so young, I was not expected to know better and looked forward to experiencing my first movie, but with this aunt’s track record, I should have known better.

My aunt was not a malicious person, only inexperienced in learning my ways, and I do not believe she intended to cause me irreparable harm by simply taking me to a movie. Quite the contrary, today, scary movies are my favorite.

We arrived at the theater and took our seats on the end of the aisle. Or should I say, I took the aisle seat at my aunt’s insistence. I should have suspected something was not right, but being the trusting soul that I am, I did not give it a second thought…at least that is until “The Tingler” appeared for the first time.

For you who have no clue what “The Tingler” was and to demonstrate the imaginative genius of film producers in the 50′s, ‘The Tingler’ was a creature that feeds on fear, lives inside the human body and looks like a disgusting centipede. Really no imagination involved other than trying to devise a creature that was scary and believable. Did I say believable? I meant credible. The early movie creatures had to have a gimmick to make them seem real and a story line that movie goers could understand. This movie did not meet the basic qualification of a scary movie other than it was not meant for an impressionable 9-year old to see. I probably could have been alright with the movie if I had known what to expect. Of course, for my aunt to tell me what to expect would have ruined all her fun.

The movie was full of eerie music that built to a crescendo just as “The Tingler” appeared. At the same time, a totally unexpected event happened. My seat began to vibrate and move back and forth. The mind of a 9-year old already frightened by the music and “The Tingler,” itself had reached its limit when the seat was set in motion. The theater management thought rigging the aisle seats to move at a specific time in the movie would heighten the effect of “The Tingler.” They exceeded their greatest expectation when this little 9 year old jumped up and yelled as loud as he could, “I am out of here,” and on that note, disrupted the entire theater trying to escape as fast as possible. There was just no way “The Tingler” was going to get this kid.

I was well on my way to escaping the theater when my aunt finally caught up to me. I think she was a little embarrassed and mad, because my reaction was not what she expected. As a stark raving lunatic, I was more believable than the actors and even “The Tingler” on the screen. You might say I succeeded where the movie failed. Yep, to this day, I think I stole the show and was the real star. My aunt would never recover and would eventually escape her embarrassment by joining the Air Force.

I would get to the point where I love horror movies and to this day, the only thing I look forward to is having her take me to another movie. I guess I will keep looking.

Acid Reflux Attacks During Pregnancy

Many women tend to experience acid reflux attacks during pregnancy and the symptoms can make it a very uncomfortable experience. As we know pregnancy is wrought with changes. Hormonal, digestive and emotional changes are the accepted parts of pregnancy, and acidity and heartburn may be one of the negative possibilities.

There are various reasons for acid reflux. Hormonal changes or the increasing pressure on the belly may be one of the reasons the muscles that control the esophagus opening may relax, causing reflux attacks. Under these circumstances, the lower esophageal sphincter, which is supposed to stay closed once the food has passed into the stomach, actually opens up and allows the gastric acid and other acidic contents to flow back into the throat and esophagus passage.

An acidity attack can be one of the most uncomfortable experiences even for a normal adult but for a pregnant woman, already facing so many different changes, a reflux incident can be very difficult to handle. While many people recommend antacids, you may find out that these don’t work each time and sometimes, may not work at all.

What is needed are a few, slowly incorporated changes to your diet and daily routine. Some of the following points detail the various ways you can avoid acid attacks during your pregnancy. You will, of course, need to consult your health practitioner and make any required changes only under his guidance.

• The primary culprit is food. You need to avoid foods that can trigger an acidity attack and cause heartburn. The list includes (and is not restricted to): chocolates, spicy foods, citrus fruits, tomatoes, fatty and fried foods, coffee and sodas.

• Caffeinated drinks have a tendency to relax the LES (lower esophagus sphincter) and allow the acid to flow upwards.

• Alcohol is an absolutely not advisable in pregnancy and the same applies to smoking. Both of these trigger reflux attacks.

• Smaller meals help contain heartburn and any acidity attacks. Avoid eating large meals in one sitting. Instead take several small meals throughout the day which will be easier (and lighter)on your digestive system.

• Eat you meals slowly. And chew your food well. Chewing allows the production of the necessary enzymes that help digest your food and also prevents heartburn.

• Have your dinner at least 2-3 hours before bedtime. A short walk will also help you with your digestion and avoid the acidity. Laying down immediately after meals is a trigger for heartburn.

• Elevate your head while sleeping. You can do this by way of a special wedge pillow or even by actually raising that part of your bed. This will allow the contents of your stomach to stay down and not make their way up to the esophageal tract.

• Avoid bending down to pick up things. Especially bending from the waist as it creates pressure on the abdominal area.

• Weight management through a gentle exercise program. Overweight people tend to have frequent reflux attacks. Incorporating daily walking or swimming can help you manage your weight during pregnancy. Consult your doctor for the right exercise for you.

• Add some essential oils to yours bath or you can even apply them after checking for allergies. Stress is one of the causes of acid reflux attacks, and essential oils like chamomile or lavender can help you feel calm and stress-free.

The above are just some of the measures you can adopt to make your pregnancy an acidity free period. If you had a tendency to reflux attacks even before you were pregnant, you may want to keep that in mind and make sure that you take appropriate measures to help yourself.
